CHARITABLE DONATIONS 2016

CGWI are a generous bunch of women, some of the charitable donations we have made this year are:

In February we had a collection for Dementia Friends after our speaker gave a talk at our meeting. We raised £40 in a bucket collection.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital put a call out for knitted squares to be used by women who are separated from their infant due to the baby needing special care. The squares are placed in the mother’s bra then placed next to their baby in the cot so the baby always has the mothers scent next to it. This has shown to help improve bonding between mother and baby and help settle poorly babies. An amazing 81 4” squares were donated. THANK YOU!

Francis House were asking for knitted Easter chicks or crème eggs to go inside the chicks and once again, CGWI women provided! We were just 2 months into being a Women’s Institute at this point and you women managed to knit 20 chicks and donate 82 crème eggs! It was a proud day for Sam and Helen handing over the donations to the very grateful staff at Francis House in Didsbury.

Back in March, Manchester University launched its ‘Time of the Month’ campaign asking for donations of sanitary products for the homeless women of Manchester. CGWI donated a LOAD of tampons and sanitary towels! In total we gave 128 tampons and 134 sanitary towels to that campaign. You continued to donate every month (because you are all ACE and understand how difficult periods would be if you didn’t have a home or money to buy basics such as sanitary protection) which we now take to The Wellspring on a regular basis!

Jeanette Archer and Lisa Walsh asked their fellow sisters at CGWI if they would be interested in donating their time to making baby ‘pocket’ blankets to donate to Stepping Hill Hospital for babies who are born sleeping or leave us soon after being born. This is a cause very close to their hearts. Cath Gaskill kindly offered her studio space in order to make the pockets and a lot of you women donated your precious time to this! For some women who were unable to attend the sewing day, they made pockets at home. We made a MOUNTAIN of blankets and pockets which were gratefully received by Stepping Hill. Thank you ALL.

In May Helen brought the ‘smalls for all’ appeal to the attention of Cale Green WI women and you all embraced the opportunity to donate bras and other ‘undergarments’ to women and girls in Africa who do not have access to these basics but are judged if they are not ‘covered up’ appropriately. You donated 20kg which was an overwhelming response! THANK YOU….AGAIN!

In June, 7 women from Cale Green WI walked 10km for St Ann’s Hospice! Tracey Bennett, Sylvia Hampton, Lisa Walsh, Gemma Jones, Pat McGivern, Stephanie Charlton and Louise Glover all walked at midnight on a summer’s night through the streets of Manchester to raise money alongside our sisters at the North East Cheshire Group and lots of other walkers from around Greater Manchester! Thank you ladies for raising £650.00 for SAH and representing CGWI so well!

In September, following the talk from Brendan at ‘The Wellspring’, Cale Green WI decided to hold a Harvest Festival and donate the proceeds to The Wellspring. The massive amount of food, toiletries, coats, blankets and clothes you great bunch donated was overwhelming! It FILLED the boot of a people carrier and the folk at The Wellspring were so grateful! Keep doing what you are doing – you are great!
